Last Day

I've been working as hard as I can on this paper, along with studying for the 2 finals that I have tomorrow. It would be helpful if I hadn't been extremely sick all weekend so I wasn't cramming today, but what can I do.  I think I am finally on the right track with what Micalee is looking for from my paper, but I am still rather unsure. At this point I am just waiting and hoping for the best because there isn't much else I can do. I hope everyone else is staying calm and not stressing too much about this paper or their finals for other classes.

Last Week of Classes

This week is almost crazier for me than finals week. Due to the amount I have to do, I have barely gotten to work revising my research paper at all. I am planning to spend Saturday and a large portion of Monday on it, just to ensure that I have made all of the changes Micalee has recommended.

Also, everyone's presentations so far have been really good! I really enjoy learning about all sorts of industries from all over.  I can't wait to see the rest of them tomorrow.

Last week

Is it just me or is the last week of classes just as bad as finals week? I have so many papers and presentations this week it is ridiculous. I am really struggling with trying to revise my rough draft due to all of the work I have in all of my other classes. At least I will have almost all weekend to focus mainly on my paper. I hope everyone is staying as stress free as possible this week!

I can't wait to see more presentations tomorrow :)

Final Paper

Since I have my presentation done, I have just been focusing on all my papers and presentations for my other classes along with trying to revise my paper for this class. I am hoping to have the parts that I needed to get revised done by Thursday so I can hopefully meet with Micalee to make sure I am making the right corrections that she told me I needed to.

Presentation

I am really glad that I presented today so I didn't have to worry and stress about the whole presenting in front of the class thing anymore. I hope it wasn't too boring, and I'm sorry that it was probably very evident that I was EXTREMELY nervous the entire time I was talking.
Everyone else that presented today did such a good job, and I can't wait to see/listen to everyone else in the class.

Presentation Complete

I just finished adding the final touches to my presentation. It is not anything very fancy, but I included a few pictures and as little text as possible to make it seem less boring. It is not super long, but I am hoping that I will be able to talk about enough stuff to take up the entire 10 minutes. I really wish that I was not so nervous about speaking in front of the class because that would make me not dread the morning coming so much. Oh well, I am just going to have to suck it up and hope for the best!

Sick

So I hate to be one of those students, but since about 10:00 last night I have been throwing up periodically and still have been this morning so I wasn't able to make it to class. I thought it would be in the best interest of myself and all of you if I didn't come to class since I have been getting sick so often. I was wondering if someone could let me know if anything major happened. I know we talked about the grading rubric because I saw Micalee's post on the main blog.

I am still working extremely hard on doing a bit more research for my paper and trying to design a power point presentation that isn't too boring, but that I am also able to present without getting too nervous about. Hopefully I will start feeling better by tonight so I can have more motivation for it all.

Break is Over.

Over Thanksgiving break, while I was at home I worked on finding a few more sources for my paper and beginning to revise it based on the meeting I had with Micalee. I even came back on Saturday instead of Sunday in order to have some time alone to focus. I have also been working more on my presentation, and I think it is coming together alright. It probably won't be the best one, but considering I don't like presenting in front of class, I think it will be okay.

Final Presentation

I've been trying to decide what I should do for my final presentation because I don't want it to be too boring, but I also have a huge fear of presenting in front of class which is making it difficult for me to figure out what to do. I will probably end up doing a power point with lots of pictures and some writing, but not too much. The only problem with this is that I have to talk to the entire class for the whole 10 minutes, which makes me nervous. I'm hoping that I will be able to just get through it when the time comes and I won't do anything too stupid or embarrassing. Wish me luck!

Finally finished!

After numerous hours reading and doing research, and many more hours spent writing word after word... page after page... I have finally finished my rough draft! I am kind of a perfectionist so there are quite a few things I am unhappy with, but for a rough draft I think it is pretty good. I will definitely be changing a lot of things in it between now and when the final draft is due.

Rough Draft

Still just working on my rough draft. It doesn't flow together very well yet, but I'm getting ideas down and working on making it flow. Right now though, I have kind of hit a dead end in my thinking and writing which is stressing me out because I'm afraid that I won't be able to finish. Hopefully I'll figure something out though to get back on track.

Also, can anyone tell me exactly what exactly Micalee is looking for with the subject headings she put in the guidelines for our final paper?

Hospitals, doctors, and tests...oh my!

I've been slowly working on my paper all week because I have been in and out of the hospital since Monday.  I've seen lots of doctors and had lots of tests done. I had to miss class and work all week. So I was wondering if someone could let me know if I missed anything this week in class that is important or of relevance to our paper. I would appreciate it.

Rough Draft Outline

Sooo I've been super busy with my other classes lately and exams and everything so I have kind of fallen behind with both my blog and working on my paper, but I did begin my outline for my rough draft today. I haven't quite been able to finish a book I got on the city of Ravenswood and the history of the aluminum company, but I'm working hard on it. I have also been trying to find some pictures that I can post and possibly use, but am struggling with it. Hopefully after Wednesday my exam schedule will be less chaotic so that I'll have more time to focus on my paper!

I finally found the minimum number of sources, I'm just not sure if there are 3 primary and 3 secondary. Everything I found is going to be extremely helpful with my paper though.
I found a stakeholders' report specifically about the company and community I am writing my research paper on, along with a book all about a huge lockout that took place just 20 years ago. Then there were a few more articles about the union and the Ravenswood Aluminum Corporation disputes, and the agreements they came to.

These will all be extremely helpful since I plan on writing the majority of my paper on how the company started and everything that has happened since them, up until the present.

Finding sources

Since I've finally picked a community, I have been trying to find sources that I can use in my research to find out more about the history and life of Ravenswood. I am struggling with being able to do so though and wondered if anyone had any suggestions or advice on what to do?

I found an article from USA Today about Ravenswood, West Virginia.  It talks a little bit about how the community started and how the community is now diminishing.
I was thinking of doing this community and starting off talking about the history of the community and how it was in high production during World War II and from there talking about how the community is slowly diminishing.

Searching for a Community

I've been trying to find a specific community during the World War II era for a while now and I am struggling with being able to find one.  I have only been able to find that manufacturing increased throughout all of the United States, but can't find any specific communities listed.

One of the main states that keeps coming up is Oregon so I have been trying to do research on communities within Oregon that was greatly impacted by World War II, and can still only find general information.

If you have any suggestions or anything, I'd really appreciate it!!

First Blog

Hi, my name is Emily Hambright and I am a junior.  My major is community relations with a cognate in history.  I also want to get a teaching degree.  I don't have a lot of experience with history in college because I just changed my major last year (for the fourth time).  Most of the experience I have is with textbooks, but I have used the archives at the library before for my own personal interests.

The time period I am most interested in is around the time of World War II.  This period has always interested me and I would like to look into the impact an industrial community had on the war or how the war impacted a certain community, if that's possible.  I'd also be interested in researching how women took over the jobs only men always did when the men went overseas to fight in the war.  I'm still looking into exactly what I want to do my project on, those are just my ideas for starting.
