I've been trying to find a specific community during the World War II era for a while now and I am struggling with being able to find one. I have only been able to find that manufacturing increased throughout all of the United States, but can't find any specific communities listed.
One of the main states that keeps coming up is Oregon so I have been trying to do research on communities within Oregon that was greatly impacted by World War II, and can still only find general information.
If you have any suggestions or anything, I'd really appreciate it!!
Thanks!!
Hi Emily -
ReplyDeleteYou might have more luck looking at different industries in the US during this time period. Are you set on WWII for some reason? Depending on the region you are looking at, you'll see all sorts of various industries. Mining in almost all parts of the country, textiles in the North East and South East, Cigar workers in the South, produce everywhere (with larger concentrations in California and other states such as Michigan), in urban areas like New York and Chicago the turn-of-the-twentieth century gave rise to manufactured goods such as clothing and canned food. There's also logging here in Michigan and in the North East, even something like cattle ranching in the west could be a possibility. Of course, with WWII, then you have a lot of industry focused on war production, so it does change quite a bit.
I hope this gives you some initial ideas. Be sure to come talk to me if you still have trouble!

ReplyDeleteI have to say WWII is one of my favorite time periods to learn about. I'm sorry you are having trouble finding a community to research though. Just a suggestion, but maybe rather than focusing on a community that was specific to one industry, maybe you can research a community of people inside a company. Not sure if that makes sense, but what I mean is you can check out women who started factory work during that time, or maybe even women in the armed forces and see how they formed communities within the places they worked. I am all for women empowerment so that is why I am focusing on that. Just a suggestion!
Good luck! see you in class
